Project Charter
Safe Room

Description
  • team with the White County affiliate of Habitat for Humanity to design and construct low cost, durable, healthy, and sustainable housing
  • apply engineering skills to find a cost effective method of creating a safe room

Objectives
  • improve the health and durability of the house through the addition of a safe room in a cost effective manner
  • discover the relationship between the cost and types of safe rooms and the levels of protection that they provide
  • determine which option for a safe room the Woodruff II build is viable with concern to cost efficiency and storm safety

Outcomes or Deliverables
  • list of safe room options and their associated costs
  • a decision with a report of the reasons for the selection
  • implementation of safe room design into designs and construction

Critical Dates
  • beginning of construction phase in late September/ early October

Estimated Budget
  • $0

TASK STATUS REPORT #1
Project Description:
• apply engineering skills to find a cost effective method of creating a safe room
Project Sponsor:
HFH
Sponsor Rep:
Rick Eichhorn
Program Manager:
Rich Wells
Project Manager:
Derek Laxton
Period Covered by the Report:
8/23/2011-9/12/2011
Accomplished This Period:
  • Researched the requirements for a successful storm shelter (FEMA, Texas Tech Wind Science and Engineering Research Center, and the National Storm Shelter Association
  • Looked into some rough pricing estimates
Planned But Not Accomplished This Period:
  • Have not developed safety continuum and price range
Objectives To Next Reporting Period:
  • Develop pricing continuum
  • Began a more thorough pricing list
  • Research construction modifications
Risks/Outstanding Issues/Problems:
  • Keeping in mind the lost cost approach
  • Remembering that this will not be an actual certified storm shelter

TASK STATUS REPORT #2
Project Description:
• apply engineering skills to find a cost effective method of creating a safe room
Project Sponsor:
HFH
Sponsor Rep:
Rick Eichhorn
Program Manager:
Rich Wells
Project Manager:
Derek Laxton
Period Covered by the Report:
9/12/2011-9/27/2011
Accomplished This Period:
  • Began developing pricing continuum
  • Began evaluating advantages and disadvantages of each design
  • Researched different construction techniques and modifications
Planned But Not Accomplished This Period:
  • Have not completely developed price range
Objectives To Next Reporting Period:
  • Further develop pricing continuum
  • Look into different pricing trends and comparison methods
Risks/Outstanding Issues/Problems:
  • Keeping in mind the lost cost approach
  • Remembering that this will not be an actual certified storm shelter

TASK STATUS REPORT #3
Project Description:
• apply engineering skills to find a cost effective method of creating a safe room
Project Sponsor:
HFH
Sponsor Rep:
Rick Eichhorn
Program Manager:
Rich Wells
Project Manager:
Derek Laxton
Period Covered by the Report:
9/27/2011-9/11/2011
Accomplished This Period:
  • Developed pricing and comparison continuum for woodframe designs
Planned But Not Accomplished This Period:
  • Develop pricing and comparison continuum for non-woodframe designs
Objectives To Next Reporting Period:
  • Finish comparison charts and prepare for presentation?
  • Possibly look into cheapest method in more depth
Risks/Outstanding Issues/Problems:
  • Keeping in mind just rough estimates
  • Not sure of actual size of shelter or of any decisions
